Candler Park Residence

“After having a failed start with our original design plans, we were directed to speak with Stephen - and we’re so grateful we connected with him! With Stephen’s patience, we ended up having a truly collaborative experience designing the home we want to grow into. We hoped for a house that would fit in with the historical architecture of Candler Park. Stephen “got it” and executed that idea in an elegantly modern way. The house maintains the neighborhood charm with an unexpectedly spacious and light-filled interior. His creativity and excitement for the project, as well as his trust and willingness to engage with our ideas, resulted in a house that is both cozy and grand. Our family loves being in our charming new home!”

-Nicole Kaufman, owner

The owners requested a new construction home on an in-town lot that was simple, straightforward and kept all the main program on the entry level. The plan organizes the public areas along the western edge of the site to capture expansive views across an adjacent undeveloped lot, while the private bedrooms are tucked along the quieter eastern side for privacy and retreat.

With no upper story, the design embraces the opportunity for vaulted ceilings throughout, lending a sense of volume and grandeur that belies the home's modest footprint. Generous operable windows flood each room with natural light and encourage cross-ventilation, while strategically placed skylights draw the eye upward and animate the interiors with shifting daylight, subtly marking the rhythm of the day.

The result is a home that feels both grounded and expansive, intimate yet open—an elegant balance of simplicity and spatial richness.
